MCP Nexus from zero to production: local setup, skills, Runner and billing

Overview

MCP Nexus is an AI skill-ecosystem platform: describe a task in plain language and let a "skill" run the automation that used to require an engineering team.

The platform has three parts: the Skill Store (browse and get skills), the Nexus Runner (a local client that runs skills on your machine), and the API / SDK (call skills from your own code or third-party AI clients).

Core concepts

  • Skill: an app-sized atomic capability — one skill solves one real problem, with clear inputs and useful output; install or remove anytime.
  • Local vs cloud skills: local skills run in the Runner on your machine; cloud skills run on the platform servers.
  • Nex: the single billing unit. Each run deducts Nex at the skill's rate; local + free skills are always 0 Nex.
  • Workflows: several skills auto-orchestrated by dependency to complete an end-to-end process (e.g. reconciliation, contract review).
The platform currently supports Windows only (Windows 10/11 x64).

Quick start (5 min)

  1. Sign up and pick a plan (the Free tier is enough to start; you get 100 permanent Nex on signup).
  2. Browse the Skill Store, pick a skill and click "Get" to add it to "My Skills".
  3. Download and start the Nexus Runner local service (default port 7432) and bind it with an API Key.
  4. Run from "My Skills" with one click — fill in the inputs and get your result.
  5. Want to call it programmatically? Hit the local Runner API with your API Key, or install the SDK / connect via MCP.

Install & download

Get and start the Nexus Runner client (Windows 10/11 x64).

  1. Open the "Download" page, get the latest Nexus Runner installer and install it.
  2. On launch the Runner listens locally on default port 7432 as the service that executes skills.
  3. On first launch, create a key on the API Keys page and follow the prompt to bind the Runner to your account.
  4. Once bound, the Runner auto-syncs the skills you have "got", ready to run from "My Skills".
The same account can install the Runner on multiple devices; plans differ on the number of API Keys / concurrent devices (see "Plans & billing").

Using skills

Browse, get and run skills, and manage "My Skills".

Get & install

  • Browse the store by category / keyword; open a skill's detail to see its inputs, output and rate (Nex).
  • Click "Get" to add a skill to "My Skills"; local skills auto-install into the Runner and sync with the platform.
  • Free + local skills are permanently free (0 Nex); paid / cloud skills deduct Nex per run, and some require a minimum plan.

Running

  • In "My Skills", pick a skill, fill in the inputs (file, text or parameters) and click Run.
  • Each skill produces exactly one output (e.g. an Excel / image / report) — download or preview it when the run finishes.
  • Local skills run on your machine; cloud skills run on the platform and return the result.

Runner configuration

Local service port, key binding, data directory and execution policy.

  • Port: default 7432 — the Runner exposes the skill-invocation API locally.
  • Key binding: bind the Runner with an account API Key; requests authenticate via the X-API-Key header.
  • Data directory: skills, cache and run outputs live in the local user data directory and survive platform changes.
  • Sandboxed execution: skills run in a controlled environment; skills that need extra Python dependencies use an isolated virtualenv.
  • Config auto-sync: on start the Runner fetches the latest pricing / quota config from the platform (cached locally), so changes need no client update.
  • Offline fallback: when the network or service is down, local skills still run and reconcile automatically once back online.

API & SDK

Invoke skills programmatically via the local Runner API, REST API, the official SDK or the MCP protocol.

Call the local Runner

Once bound, call the local Runner with your API Key:

curl -X POST http://localhost:7432/api/v1/skills/data-clean/invoke \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -H "X-API-Key: $NEXUS_API_KEY" \
  -d '{ "input": { "file_path": "./data.csv" },
        "params": { "drop_duplicates": true } }'

SDK & MCP

  • SDK: pip install nexus-sdk, then use SkillClient to call skills from Python; a nexus CLI is included.
  • MCP: MCP Nexus exposes skills as an MCP service, so any MCP client (e.g. Claude, Cursor) can connect and invoke platform skills.
  • Full reference: fields, error codes and examples are in the SDK Reference.

Plans & billing

Membership tiers, the Nex billing model, quotas and invoices.

Plans

PlanPriceMonthly NexAPI Keys
Free¥02001
Pro¥49/mo (¥399/yr)3,0001
Enterprise¥299/mo (¥2,399/yr)50,000*Unlimited + priority support

The Nex model

  • Monthly grant: reset each billing cycle per plan (does not roll over).
  • Reward Nex: earned from quests, redeem codes etc. — permanent, never expire (non-cashable).
  • Runs deduct at the skill's own Nex rate, spending expiring quota first; skills marked free (T0) cost 0 Nex and running in Nexus Runner uses no account quota.
Top-up packs are retired (subscription-only): upgrade to Pro / Enterprise for a higher monthly Nex quota.
Quota resets each billing cycle; manage billing and invoices on the "Plans" page. International payment currently supports PayPal.
